From Bidochons to Tartuffe!

A jam-packed week as far as French is concerned this week, as you can go and dance at the sound of French music in the Vodka Club tonight (on the Cowgate), with various drinks offers if you can face it on a Monday!

Tuesday sees a pre-show talk by Liz Lochhead (£3.00), who translated Molière's Tartuffe into Scots back in 1985 - I will personally go and see the play on Saturday (matinée, so bundle-of-love can experience theatre first-hand! - although I decided we should be seated in one of the boxes on the side so if things got too 'boooooring' for b-o-l, he would be able to play with his legos on the floor. Hum, we'll just have to see about that!).
If you're keen but can't make it this week, no worries: it's on at the Lyceum until mid-February: More info here, various prices depending on where you'd rather sit.
If you go and see the show on Tuesday, and you feel brave enough, you could always join other French speakers in The World (Thistle Street). It's free and you can talk French until 11pm. This free event is on every Tuesday: don't be shy and come along (just ask at the bar where the French speakers are). People there are friendly, and always interested in meeting new people!

However if comedy does not appeal to you, and it's time to get serious: Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Lift to the Scaffold), the classique by Louis Malle, with Jeanne Moreau and a musical score by Miles Davies is being screened at the Filmhouse, on Tuesday at 6pm and on Wednesday at 2pm.

Finally (lots of things on tomorrow!): if you're free during the day, you may want to go and check out a talk given at Weston Link about Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Architect as Artist (12.45-1.30pm) @Weston Link - Hawthorden Lecture Theatre: best thing about it - it's FREE, like the best things in life!

On Wednesday night, you're in luck, as there will be yet another meetup session (virtually free - more info here). It takes place in : Au Bar (101 Shandwick Place , 0131 228 2648). You can recognise the group because of the red and white distinctive cards on the tables.

Take a break on Thursday... Or take advantage of your free time to check out some DVDs: I have just seen Harry, he's here to help, and though it's slightly sinister, I thought it was so good we would study it in my Film class (starting next week). (contact me for more info if interested!).
Or, if you've not seen them before, La Marche des Penguins (March of the Penguins) and De Battre mon Coeur s'est arrêté (The Beat That My Heart Skipped) are both on at the Cameo at various times

On Friday 20 January, 13 (Tzameti) opens at the Filmhouse (various times). Seems intriguing, as the Filmhouse people describe it as " initially shot as the grunge version of a '50s noir thriller from France (or Soviet Georgia)" , eventually turning into a "shocker". Obviously not your typical French film!!!

Finally if by Saturday you've not had enough yet, go and check out Renaud Garcia-Fons.
In case you missed him during the summer, this French composer and jazz musician is back for one night in Edinburgh, and another one in Glagow.
